Week 2 Player of the Week
After every weekend of the Texas high school football season, visit this page to find out the candidates for the Player of the Week Award. This honor is awarded to the top performance of the week in Texas High school football. Voting will begin every Monday morning and close Friday at noon.
Week 2 winner: Albert Chavez, Mercedes QB
The phrase "shootout" barely begins to describe Los Fresnos' 50-48 win over Mercedes last Friday.
The teams traded blows back and forth all night in an offensive free for all. In the end, Los Fresnos was the winner, but Mercedes quarterback Albert Chavez was clearly the player of the week - not only in that game, but in the entire state.
Chavez rushed for 318 yards and passed for 287 more - a whopping total of 605 total yards of offense. Mercedes had 643 yards as a team. The Tigers trailed by 28 points at halftime, but Chavez kept battling and battling and almost stole the victory. He rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another.
Los Fresnos had beaten Mercedes 52-14 a year ago, so the fact that Mercedes kept the score so close this year speaks volumes to the performance Chavez gave. He never gave up, and for that, he's a deserving choice as Texas Football's Player of the Week.
