Army Strong Teams of Week 2

Each week, TexasFootball.com and the U.S. Army join together to select one team from every classification in high school football that demonstrated the qualities exhibited within the Army - those include leadership, commitment to excellence and a desire to make a difference as a member of a team. Each is awarded the Army Strong Team of the Week by local officials from the U.S. Army at a school assembly or pep rally.
TEAMS OF THE WEEK CLASS 5A: Odessa Permian Two weeks after being shut out in its season opener, Odessa Permian unleashed an offensive barrage against No. 10 Cedar Hill en route to a 53-42 victory. Running back DeAnthony Fay led the Panthers with 265 rushing yards on just 13 carries, including a 19-yard TD run in the third quarter. Permian finished the game with 506 total yards. CLASS 4A: Aledo No. 2 Aledo did something Friday that no other team had been able to do since 2007: Beat No. 1 Lake Travis. Aledo ended Lake Travis’ 48-game winning streak with a hard-fought 14-10 victory at Darrell K. Royal/Memorial Stadium in Austin. Aledo RB Jonathan Gray scored the winning TD on a fourth-down play with six minutes left. He finished the game with 145 yards on 31 carries. CLASS 3A: Tyler Chapel Hill Tyler Chapel Hill didn’t just snap No. 2 Carthage’s 31-game winning streak, the Bulldogs did it with authority. Chapel Hill routed Carthage, 46-14, with a complete effort on both sides of the ball. Chapel Hill rolled up 422 total yards and averaged 7.4 yards per play. RB Lairamie Lee led the Bulldogs with 161 rushing yards and four TDs on only 10 carries. CLASS 2A: Jefferson Jefferson made its case to be included on the long list of East Texas powers with an impressive 35-28 win over Paul Pewitt, which was ranked No. 7 in 2A DII. Jefferson RB Damon Gray led the way with 238 rushing yards and two TDs. Jefferson rolled up 367 total yards in the win. CLASS 1A: Mason Mason faced its toughest non-district foe on Friday night when the Punchers went up against 2A DI No. 7 Comfort. The game went down to the wire, and Mason emerged with a 34-33 win, thanks in large part to the play of RB David Mora. Mora rushed for 258 yards and four TDs, including the game’s final two scores as the Punchers rallied from a 33-20 deficit. SIX-MAN: Ira Six-man football is known for its high-scoring games, and this week’s highest-scoring game was a thriller. Ira held off Ropes, 90-88, to improve to 3-0 and move up to No. 3 in the SixManFootball.com state rankings. Ira was 11-1 in 2009. PRIVATE SCHOOLS: Houston Kinkaid Houston Kinkaid scored the game’s final three touchdowns as the Falcons rallied from a 34-20 deficit to escape with a 40-34 overtime victory against Houston Second Baptist. Kinkaid QB Ford Childress rushed for the tying TD and the winning TD and finished with 369 passing yards as the Falcons improved to 3-0 on the season. Teammate Sam Eggleston added 87 rushing yards, 146 receiving yards and 3 TDs.
