Week 1 winner: Seguin QB Brig Gerlich

Seguin needed a win last week against Georgetown, and junior quarterback Brig Gerlich almost singlehandedly delivered one.

Gerlich had a near-perfect game as the Matadors routed Georgetown, 41-20.

Gerlich completed 31 of 37 passes for 326 yards and one touchdown. As if that wasn't enough, he also carried the ball 20 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns as Seguin rolled up an impressive 615 yards and 40 first downs.

Gerlich is the centerpiece of Seguin coach Jim Carson's rebuilding effort. The Matadors were only 2-8 last season and opened this year with a disappointing loss to long-time rival New Braunfels.

But the win over Georgetown gave Seguin something to build on heading into Friday night's game against San Antonio East Central. In fact, Seguin's junior class is strong all the way around, so Carson indeed might be able to turn things around if Gerlich and his classmates continue to show progress.
