Unique tales in East Texas
Posted by David Smoak on 19 September 2011 | 0 comments

I sent an email to high school football coaches throughout East and Central Texas last week looking for a story or two that is something different than the everyday, Team-X beat Team-Y.

But, before I get to some of their responses (which I hope to provide each week), I have to mention the Paris win at Sulphur Springs, 21-14, the Wildcats are 4-0 and it's Celina this week.

Anytime you play Celina it's a big week, but especially for Barry Bowman.  Remember now, he was the head coach at Daingerfield when the Tigers went into Celina and ended their 10-year home winning streak on September 12, 2008?  It was the same year of Hurricane Ike, so the game was moved from a neutral site (Royse City) to Celina with concerns about the weather.

Daingerfield beat Celina that night, 28-20, ending the Bobcats 10-year home winning streak, their 45-game overall winning streak and their 46-game non-district regular season winning streak.

Daingerfield was in the midst of three consecutive state championships under Bowman (2008-2010) and Celina hasn't forgotten, believe me, they haven't.  Just ask Bowman, who received a little "love note" from a Celina fan reminding Bowman of Celina's tradition and how they've been waiting to "welcome" him back to their stadium.

It should be a fun game that perhaps wasn't expected to be that way when the two programs decided to play each other after the 2010 realignment.

A short note in Class 4-A, where not one single team in District 13-4A or 14-4A is above .500.

-----

Another short note in Class 1-A, everyone expected two unbeatens, Garrison and Tenaha met, and it was the Class 1-A, Division II team (Tenaha) edging a good one from Division I (Garrison), 21-20.

Here's my weekly Justin Twine update.  Twine is the sophomore quarterback at Hemphill who ran for 534-yards two weeks ago against West Sabine.  Twine ran for 349 yards against Buna in a 64-60 loss.

Great memories this Friday where Overton is rededicating their football field to one of the nicest gentleman I've ever met in the coaching profession, Chester Roy.  I want to give Matthias Prosser who gave me the heads-up last week.

Former players and alumni of Overton are expected to be at the ceremony to rededicate the field that was originally dedicated to Coach Roy in 2003.  But, after a $6.5 million dollar bond issue the administration wants to have another dedication of Coach Chester Roy Stadium when the Sabine Cardinals come to town.

Coach Roy retired in 1995 after leading the Mustangs to a 13-2 record, he passed away in December, 2005.

Okay, bizarre weekend for me, went to broadcast Midway @ Everman on Friday and expected a great game.  Midway linebacker Wesley Abercrombie returned an interception for a touchdown on the game's opening play.  In fact, Midway intercepted Everman three times in the first quarter and led, 20-0.  Everman was driving inside the Midway 15-yard line when the game was suspended for a lightning strike in the area.  Less than 15-minutes later, the game was canceled with Midway leading 20-0 with 8:55 left in the second-quarter.  The correct decision was made because there was a torrential downpour for about the next hour and some occasional flashes or lightning.

And, on Saturday night I'm covering SFA @ Baylor and that game is delayed due to a lightning strike in the area.  Baylor was leading 31-0 at the time and there was only a minute or two left in the first half.  After a 41-minute delay, both teams came out and Baylor continued their dominance, but before play resumed the officials announced the 3rd and 4th quarters would be only 12-minutes, not 15-minutes and the 3rd-quarter started a minute after halftime ended.  Baylor led 48-0 when the game was called with just under 3-minutes remaining in the 3rd-quarter.

Now, here are some of the responses I received from East and Central Texas high school football coaches on something unique or a human interest story:

Smoaky,

We have a young man, Isaac Villafana, who is 3' 7" (yes, 3-feet 7-inches) tall.  You would have to truly see him in person to understand all of his hardship.  Best part though is that in English class the teacher asked all of the students to write a paper about obstacles they've had to overcome in life.  Isaac asked the teacher to help him because he couldn't think of anything.  He doesn't look at his size as an obstacle.  Isaac weights 71-pounds, but you would never know it and he is LOVED by his teammates and is a big part of what we do with our program.  I have never had a team that gets louder and has more smiles on their face than this one when Isaac gets a chance to play in a game.  We call him "Too Tall" and he received the player of the week from our team during the Week Zero win against Rosebud-Lott.  He was on the field for three plays and we scored on two of them.  We are proud of our winning tradition and yes, wins and losses are a part of the game but every day we get to be around Isaac, it's a win-win for all of us.

Tim Seward, AD/Football Coach, McGregor High School

David,

We have Tanner Perales, who was paralyzed from the waist down in a diving accident this summer at Lake Limestone.  He would have been our starting slot receiver and is a senior.  He will be able to come back to school very soon.  Our community, students and student-athletes have rallied in support of Tanner.  They have done fundraisers, helped build a room out of the carport at Tanner's house for him when he returns home.  It has been touching to watch how this community has supported Tanner and he is our motivation for the season and his jersey and helmet go with us to every practice and game.

Stony Coffman, AD/Football Coach, Teague High School

-----

David,

We have lost a young man, he was a JV linebacker named Carlos Salas in a car wreck before our JV game against Thorndale.  We also have a cross country student-athlete who was also paralyzed in the wreck and we're awaiting word on whether it's permanent.  There were two others kids who were injured but are recovering.  We have played the past two weeks with heavy hearts and although we came up short against Thorndale, we have all learned some valuable lessons in life.  I would also like to thank the people of Thorndale, they were gracious and let a bus load of our kids travel over to their place for free.  Please keep us in your prayers.

Paul Smith, AD/Football Coach, Florence High School

-----

Smoaky,

You want unique?  How about that we have FIVE (5) sets of brothers on our team this season.  I don't know if that qualifies as a human interest story, but it's something I've never heard of in my years in coaching.

Thank you.

Bret Atkins, Head Football Coach, All Saints Episcopal School
