Leon Perez rushed for 117 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Carroll Tigers defeated King 38-14. The Tigers, who already had a playoff spot clinched, scored all 38 of their points in the first half as Arthur Gutierrez added a touchdown run and D’Sean Evans returned an interception 37 yards for another score. Freshman QB Michael Cantu also got the Tigers on the board when he tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to John Bighamian.
King got 205 yards rushing from QB Dezi Rodriquez and 103 more from Rodolfo Alonzo. Rodriquez had both touchdowns, scoring on runs of 80 and 27 yards for the Mustangs, who also made the playoffs despite the loss.
Calallen used a strong ground game to defeat Ray 55-20 to claim the district title. The Wildcats amassed 504 yards on the ground, led by Buddy Wright with 208 yards and three touchdowns. QB’s Tanner Sparks and Preston Dorsey also rushed for over 100 yards for Calallen. Dorsey had scoring runs of 85 and four yards, Cooper Storm added a 20 yard score and Sparks connected with Marcus Price on a 48 yard scoring strike. Ray QB Rey Rodriquez passed for 339 yards and passed for two touchdowns, eclipsing the CCISD record. Luke Moffitt and Reed Clemons each hauled in one scoring pass and Moffitt closed the scoring with a one yard rushing score for the Texans.
Gregory-Portland got two touchdowns and 78 yards rushing from Justin McArthur as the Wildcats clinched a playoff spot with their 21-6 win over Beeville. Michael Johnson added 82 yards on the ground and Devin Bisby scored on a one yard run for the Wildcats. The Trojans lone score came in the fourth when Brooks Holder hit Kyle Wright with a 57 yard scoring pass. Holder finished with 66 yards passing and Frankie Gutierrez finished with 99 yards rushing for Beeville.
Flour Bluff earned the final playoff spot in District 31-4A with their 63-31 win over Tuloso-Midway. Kolton Mims rushed for 112 yards and two scores and passed for 162 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hornets. Brandon Villarreal added 125 yards rushing while Trenton Bailey, TeaAndre Campbell and Eric Roy each added scoring runs. Jason Gonzalez finished with two scores and 49 yards rushing for T-M while Kenny Smith added 68 yards rushing. QB Jonathan Iglesias rushed for one score and tossed a 37-yard TD pass to Ruben Galavis.
CLASS 3A, 2A, 1A
Mathis punched their ticket to the playoffs with a 28-9 win over Rockport-Fulton. Mathis QB Gabriel Alvarado completed 5 of 6 passes for 156 yards while Donnie Butler rushed for 99 yards with scoring runs of 7, 37 and 14 yards to lead the way. Levi Mair added 76 yards rushing and scored on a nine yard run for Mathis. R-F got their only touchdown of the night when Justin Daniel tossed a lateral to Tyler Hull for a 32-yard score. Daniel finished with 56 yards rushing while Stratton Williams completed 12 of 24 passes for 175 yards.
Miller earned itself a playoff spot after defeating West Oso 37-14. Michael Perry led the way with 157 yards rushing and a two yard touchdown run. Jason Trevino added 54 yards on the ground and two scores. Billy Valenzuela completed the Buc scoring when he returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown. The Bears opened the scoring when Jerome Blakenship tossed a 63 yard TD pass to R.J. Garcia. Darnell Butler had the other Bear score when he returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.
San Diego got a 26-14 win over Taft, but the Greyhounds earned the top seed despite the loss. Ryan Guerrero led the Vaqueros with 150 yards rushing and scored on a 10 yard run. Luis Lopez added a 17 yard run for a score and Marty Saenz rushed for a two yard score and hauled in a 19-yard scoring strike from L.T. Alaniz. Eli Saldivar scored on a 48 yard run and Martin Gomez caught a 10-yard TD pass from Jonathan Acosta for Taft. Saldivar finished with 91 yards rushing and Acosta completed 6 of 13 pass for 46 yards for the Greyhound.
Refugio took a quick 51-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a 65-13 win over Banquete. Terrence Smith led the Bobcats with 131 yards rushing on just five carries and scored on runs of 48, 37 and 27 yards. Shiloh Whetsel and Draigon Silvas each scored twice, Richard Tuttle added a 2-yard scoring run and Aaron Perez tossed a 54 yard scoring strike to Brian Medina for the Bobcats. Ben Benavides and Jacob Gonzalez, who had 55 yards rushing, scored for the Bulldogs.
Cayleb Holt rushed for 109 yards and Brady Jones added 102 as George West defeated SA Randolph 42-13. Jones and Holt added one rushing score each and Seth Pipken added two for the Longhorns.
Aaron Bueno rushed for 137 yards and passed for 293 more as Ben Bolt defeated Kenedy 52-28. Gabriel Ramirez added 237 yards rushing and two scores for the Badgers and Bueno added four TD passes, three to Andres Alaniz who finished with 10 receptions for 171 yards.
John Paul II clinched its first playoff spot with a 22-12 win over SA Texas Military Institute. Nick Vidal opened the scoring with an 84-yard punt return for a score and Ben Brooks hauled in a 24 yard TD pass from Blake McKinzie in the first half. McKinzie, who passed for 134 yards added a one yard TD run for the Centurions.

King dropped a 28-14 decision to SA Southwest on the road. J.D. Rodriquez finished with 55 yards rushing and one score while Dezi Rodriquez added 43 yards on the ground and hit Sterling Cromwell with a 15-yard scoring strike for the Mustangs who were penalized for 130 yards on the night.
Carroll dropped a hard fought 15-10 decision to SA East Central. The Tigers, who managed just 104 yards of total offense, got a seven yard score from Jarvis Luckerson and a 33-yard firld goal from John Nelson during the loss.
Calallen outscored Alice 21-0 in the second half as they pulled away for a 43-22 win. Avery Cortez returned a kick 81 yards for a score and Buddy Wright added two rushing scores for the Wildcats. Given McClure, Marcus Price and Tanner Sparks each added scoring runs. Steve Villarreal led the Coyotes with 106 yards rushing and one score while Mikey Lopez and Lucas Almaraz each finished with touchdown runs.
Port Lavaca rushed for 418 yards as they beat Beeville 28-0. QB Joseph Bargas finished with 225 yards and two scores while Brandon Griffith added 126 yards and a score. MacGyver Chapa had the other Sandcrab score on a 10-yard reception from Bargas. Frankie Gutierrez rushed for 39 yards and Brooks Holder passed for 58 yards to lead the Trojans.
Rey Rodriquez passed for 281 yards and Marcus Mosely added 110 yards through the air as Ray defeated Tuloso-Midway 62-29. Luke Moffitt led the Texans with seven catches for 146 yards including scoring catches of 13, 9 and 69 yards. David Black added a 43 yard scoring reception and returned a kick 87 yards for another score while Trevante Warren led the way with 60 yards rushing. Kenny Smith led T-M with 83 yards rushing and one score while Jonathan Iglesias passed for two touchdowns.
Flour Bluff scored 41 points in the second half as they defeated Moody 56-20. Brandon Villarreal finished with 152 yards rushing and one score while Kolton Mims rushed for two scores and passed for another two, finishing with 95 yards rushing and 99 yards passing for the Hornets. Dorian Johnson led the Trojans with 61 yards rushing and 65 yards passing. Jordan Pratt hauled in two TD passes and Jonathan Trejo caught a 77-yard TD pass from Jeremy Olivo.
Michael Johnson scored two times as Gregory-Portland defeated Victoria West 39-14. Johnson finished with 67 yards rushing while Justin McArthur added 69 and Devin Bisby added 56 and a score. McArthur finished with one rushing score and hauled in a 21-yard scoring strike from Kyle Fishbeck.
CLASS 3A, 2A, 1A
Sinton remained unbeaten, holding off Mathis 28-21. Keith Garcia finished with 63 yards rushing and Carson Cave added 58 more for Sinton. Cave finished with three touchdown runs and Garcia added a 42-yard run after an interception by teammate Ramsey Rivera. Mathis finished the night with 352 yards rushing, getting 135 from Donnie Butler. Gabriel Alvarado had a 50-yard score and Levi Mair added a pair of one yard runs for touchdowns.
Miller inched closer to a playoff spot after defeating Orange Grove 35-8. Michael Perry led the Bucs with 150 yards rushing with scoring runs of 75 and 28 yards. Terrell Clay added 86 yards rushing and a 49 yard score while Shaquille Mayberry picked up a defensive score for Miller. Ramiro Montalvo had the only Bulldog score when he recovered a fumble in the end zone. Chris Gonzalez passed for 120 yards, but was picked off twice.
Skidmore-Tynan got 118 yards rushing from Sonny Hernandez as the Bobcats defeated Hebbronville 29-21. Hernandez had an eight yard score and Jeremy Byrd added 64 yards on the ground. Zach Menger added a rushing score and Rene Jimenez caught a touchdown pass for the Bobcats.
Shiloh Whetsel only had nine yards rushing, but it was good enough for a score and he returned a kick 90 yards and a punt 59 yards for scores as Refugio defeated Kingsville Academy 76-0. Draigon Silvas led the way with 68 yards rushing and one score for the Bobcats.
Taft defeated Odem 37-0 led by Eli Saldivar who scored on runs of 30 and 40 yards. Jonathan Acosta finished with two scoring passes hitting Steven Mendez and Gabriel Martinez.
CC King clinches playoff bid

Julian Bost rushed for 126 yards as the King Mustangs clinched a playoff spot with their 26-14 win over SA Highlands. Bost scored on two short runs while Brett Bolus returned a punt 14 yards for another score and Marquis Harris closed the Mustang scoring with a one yard run.
Carroll got 99 yards rushing from Jarvis Luckerson as the Tigers defeated SA Southwest 35-7. Luckerson finished with scoring runs of three and one yards while Jonathan Turner rushed for a 23 yard score and hauled in a 42 yard scoring strike from Michael Cantu. Jason Mayorga closed the Tiger scoring with a three yard run and the Carroll defense held Southwest to 205 yards of offense.
Alice hit Ray with 316 yards rushing as the Coyotes upended Ray 52-34. Steve Villarreal led the way with 142 yards rushing and four touchdowns while Lucas Almaraz finished with 100 yards and one score for Alice. J.C. Rivera returned a punt 95 yards for a score and Mikey Lopez added a one yard score for Alice. Ray’s Luke Moffitt finished with four catches for 113 yards and a score and added a 20 yard scoring run. Rey Rodriquez finished with 201 yards passing, hitting Marcus Mosley for a 12-yard TD pass. Johnny Rodella and Ashton Benavidez added short scoring runs for the Texans.
Victoria East used it’s speed to overcome Gregory-Portland 42-25. Ervin Yates led the Titans with 104 yards passing and tacked on 110 yards on the ground, scoring on runs of 70, 8 and one yards. Jonathan Garner added 102 yards along with scoring runs of nine and 45, the second score coming in a two minute stretch where the Titans scored three times. Michael Johnson led the Wildcats with 162 yards rushing, including scoring runs of 31 and 75 yards.
Moody rushed for 395 yards as they cruised past Tuloso-Midway 40-21. Dorian Johnson finished with 216 yards on the ground and passed for another 115. Johnson scored on runs of 67 and three yards and tossed a 28 yard scoring pass to Jordan Pratt, who also added a 62 yard TD run to open the scoring for Moody. Chris Jones added 54 yards rushing and score a pair of touchdowns. Kenny Smith scored on a 68 yard run and returned a kick 80 yards for another Warrior score. Richard Crossland caught a 28 yard pass from Jonathan Iglesias for the other T-M score.
Flour Bluff picked up their first district win as Brandon Villarreal rushed for 300 yards and scored on runs of 95, 80, 65 and 27 yards to lead the Hornets over Kingsville 48-14. Kolton Mims added 132 yards rushing and scored twice for the Hornets, who finished with 559 yards rushing. Xavier Bernal hauled in a 16 yard scoring pass from Julian Guerrero and Demetre Richardson, who had 153 yards rushing, scored on a 64 yard run to pace the Brahmas.
Beeville got their offense going as they drubbed Floresville 55-35. Frankie Gutierrez rushed for 139 yards, rushed for one score and caught scoring passes of 27 and 34 yards from Brooks Holder. Ryan Rangel, Nick Waters and Eric Rosales each added scoring runs and Aaron Castilla returned a fumble for a 45 yard score to lead the Trojans.
Joseph Bargas rushed for 258 yards and scored three times to lead Port Lavaca over Victoria West 54-34. Bargas also tossed a 48 yard scoring pass to Jeremy Loya, who added a 60 yard TD run for the Sandcrabs.
Ingleside passed for 326 yards as they beat previously unbeaten Mathis 42-35. Tristen Barajas completed 19 of 28 passes, hitting David McHugh nine times for 197 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs. David McHugh also returned a punt 78 yards for a score and brother Matt McHugh hauled in scoring passes of 17 and 5 yards. Marquis Barrolle led Ingleside with 123 yards rushing and Barajas added another 54 yards.
The Pirates ground attack had three runners over 100 yards rushing, Rashad Washington (123), Donnie Butler (123) and Levi Mair (119), but it would not be enough. Mair and Butler finished with two scores each for Mathis.
West Oso fell to Raymondville 48-19. The Bears got 63 yards rushing from Darius Dorsey who also scored on a 19-yard run. William Enriquez hauled in a 26 yard scoring pass from Jerome Blankenship and Matthew Meave added 82 yards rushing with a 56 yard scoring run.
Tyrell Clay rushed for 140 yards and Michael Perry added 129 more as Miller beat Lyford 38-28. Perry finished with two scores while Clay added scoring runs of 7, 1 and 24 yards.
Bobby Torres rushed for 156 yards and Brady Jones added four scores as George West defeated SA Cole 30-6.
Refugio picked up 456 yards of offense as they defeated Premont 70-14. Draigon Silvas scored four times and Terrance Smith, who had 94 yards rushing, added two scores for the Bobcats. Aaron Perez passed for 168 yards and Travis Quintanilla tossed three scoring passes for Refugio.
Rockport-Fulton got 141 yards rushing by Justin Daniel as the Pirates defeated Goliad 45-20. Daniel’s finished with three touchdown runs while Tai Temple and Jeremy Pena added scoring runs. On defense Isiah Mendiola and Darren Phan each returned an interception for a touchdown. Timmy Flores passed for 191 yards, including scoring strikes to Kaid Brown and Abram Valdez to lead the Tigers.
The Sinton Pirates remained unbeaten after beating Aransas Pass 55-13. QB Carson Cave paced the Pirates with 271 yards passing and 147 yards rushing on the night. Cave scored two times on the ground and had scoring strikes to Ramsey Rivera (24 yards) and Lee Olbera (74 yards). Rivera finished the game with six catches for 127 yards while Keith Garcia added 109 yards rushing and four scores. William Butler paced the Panthers with a 63 yard touchdown run and earlier hauled in a 67 yard TD pass from Erik Johnson.

CC Carroll's quick start

Carroll opened District 28-5A play with a 23-20 win over South San. Jarvis Luckerson opened the Tiger scoring with a 53 yard run in the first and in the second John Nelson tacked on a 20-yard FG. John Bighamian would then haul on a 33-yard TD pass from Michael Cantu and Jonathan Turner would add a two yard scoring run for the Tigers. Cantu finished with 124 yards passing while Turner led the Tigers with 97 yards on the ground.
The turnover bug stung the King Mustangs, fumbling seven times during their 47-0 loss to SA East Central. Rodolfo Alonzo paced the Mustangs with 85 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Alice wins big in district opener

Alice opened up district play with a 41-0 win over Tuloso-Midway on the road. Mikey Lopez rushed for 120 yards and scored three times while Steve Villarreal added another 92 yards to lead the Coyotes. QB Miguel Avila passed for two scores, hitting Villarreal and A.J. Perez. Alex Ponce added 98 yards through the air, tossing a 46 yard score to Perez. Jonathan Iglesias completed 10 of 28 passes for 64 yards, but was intercepted four times for the Warriors.
Ray scored 30 points in the second quarter to cruise past Kingsville 60-20. Rey Rodriquez completed 17 of 23 passes for 314 yards and six touchdowns. David Black hauled in six catches for 143 yards, with scoring receptions of 53 and 24 yards. Reed Clemons hauled in four passes for 83 yards, two for touchdowns and Luke Moffitt caught three for 63 yards. Kingsville got 163 yards rushing from Demetre Richardson with scoring runs of one and 44 yards. Lucas De La Paz added the other Brahma score on a 12 yard run.
Calallen scored 22 points in the third quarter as they breezed by Moody 49-0. Preston Dorsey tossed a touchdown pass to Nick Ginn and added two scores on the ground for the Wildcats. Tanner Sparks threw a 30-yard TD pass to J.J. Dallas and a 49-yard touchdown to Ginn, who also returned a fumble 27 yards for another score. Anthony Martinez completed 13 of 23 passes for 84 yards and Jordan Pratt had six receptions for 33 yards to lead the Trojans.

Sinton closed out non-district play with a 34-12 win over Orange Grove. QB Carson Cave passed for 288 yards and rushed for 42 yards for the Pirates. John Gabriel Guzman had 11 carries for 42 yards, with three resulting in touchdowns. Ramsey Rivera led the Pirates with 11 receptions for 142 yards and Jeremy Laws had three receptions for 83 yards. The Bulldogs got 90 yards rushing from Caleb Cawyer while Mark Vasquez and Jackson McBride each scored on one yard runs.
Robstown picked up 287 yards rushing as they defeated Ingleside 38-30. Randy Flores rushed for 165 yards and scored three times to lead the Pickers. Marty Gutierrez added a one yard score and Flores connected with Joseph Gaona from 14 yards for the other Robstown score. Ingleside took a 10-0 lead after Cordell Echols recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Matt McHugh kicked a 20-yard FG. Matt McHugh passed for 317 yards, connecting with David McHugh twice for touchdowns. Marquis Barrolle had the other Mustang touchdown, scoring from 13 yards out.
Odem got 139 yards rushing and 122 yards passing from Zach Anderson as the Owls fought off John Paul II 41-39. Greg Martinez added 122 yards rushing and hauled in a 65-yard scoring pass from Anderson for the Owls. QB Blake McKinzie led the Centurions with 276 yards passing, completing 11 of 18 passes. Nick Vidal led the way with five catches for 156 yards, including an 80-yard scoring pass from McKinzie.
Ben Bolt got 492 yards passing from Aaron Bueno as the Badgers beat Shiner 27-21. Andres Alaniz fell just short of the state record with 17 catches for 381 yard for Ben Bolt. Bueno finished with two rushing scores and tossed two scores, both to Alaniz.
Benavides captured their District 16-A opener by defeating Agua Dulce 26-6. David Nerio returned a kick 82 yards for a score and Rudy Saenz followed with a 37-yard rushing score on the first quarter. John Gallardo added a one yard score and Robert Rodriquez hauled in a 22-yard scoring pass from Gallardo for the Eagles. Colby Whitley rushed for 49 yards and had the lone Longhorn score on a three yard run.
Refugio continued to roll as they pounded Riviera 69-13. The Bobcats got 178 yards passing from Aaron Perez and 168 from Travis Quintanilla while Brian Medina added 118 yards rushing. Terrance Smith and Medina each had two rushing scores, Shiloh Whetsel caught one score and rushed for another and both Connor Lowrie and Quentin Bellows caught scoring passes for the Bobcats. The Seahawks got 135 yards passing from Heston Van Fleet, but he was intercepted three times. Van Fleet hit Chris Foster for a 74-yard touchdown and Nate Garcia recovered a fumble in the end zone for the other Riviera score.
Banquete won their second district game, defeating Hebbronville 21-16. QB Ben Benavides passed for 165 yards including a fourth quarter 23-yard touchdown pass to AJ Chapa for the Bulldogs. Chisolm Wright and Jacob Gonzalez each added scoring runs for Banquete. Abram Ramirez led the Longhorns with 154 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Victoria East's close-out success

King stayed close early, but eventually fell to Victoria East 53-14. After the Titans jumped to a 16-0 lead, Dezi Rodriquez scored on a one yard run and Rodolfo Alonzo scored on a 78-yard run to pull the Mustangs within 16-14, but the Titans scored the final 36 points of the game. Alonzo finished with 122 yards rushing and Julian Bost added 66 more yards on the ground for the Mustangs.
Port Lavaca stayed with state ranked Cuero for three quarters, but tumbled late as they fell to the Gobblers 34-21. Brandon Griffith has 97 yards rushing and Joseph Bargas added 91 more as the Sandcrabs finished with 281 yards on the ground, but it would not be enough. Devian Cantu, Griffith and Casey Hoffman each had scoring runs for PLC.
Gregory-Portland turned in their best rushing effort of the season as they got past Rockport-Fulton 24-9. G-P got 103 yards rushing from Matt Rooney and touchdown runs from Michael Johnson, Kyle Fishbeck and Roman Rodriquez for the win. The Pirates were held well below their season average on the ground, but still managed 172 yards, led by Justin Daniel with 111 yards. Rockport-Fulton’s lone touchdown of the night came when QB Stratton Williams connected with Jason Seawright on an 11-yard pass.

Kolton Mims passed for 128 yards and rushed for 127 more, running for two scores and tossed a pair of scores, a 13-yard TD pass to Cameron Cardenas and 23 yards to Derek Polansky. Brandon Villarreal added 100 yards rushing for the Hornets.

CC Miller fought off a late Kingsville rally to hold on for their first win of the season 15-14. Miller opened the scoring when Tyrell Clay hit Jesus Loredo with a 36-yard TD pass early on. The Bucs picked up their second score when Michael Perry scored from eight yards out, Julian Firo added the 2-point conversion to make it 15-0. Kingsville scored twice in the 4th when Julian Guerra scored from 35 yards and Demetre Richardson added a one yard score. Guerra finished with 84 yards rushing and Richardson added 65. For the Bucs, Clay had 78 yards rushing and 52 passing.

Goliad used 27 second quarter points to defeat Bishop 34-0. QB Timmy Flores led the Tigers with 169 yards passing, hitting Cody Barnett (67-yards) and Kelby Duque (55-yards) with scoring passes while adding a 14 and three yard scoring runs. Abram Valdez opened the Goliad scoring with a 55-yard interception return for a score. Jacob Beltran led the Badgers with 42 yards rushing.
Carlos Pinedo rushed for three scores and caught another as Annapolis Christian beat SA Winston 66-41. Pinedo finished with 254 yards rushing while QB Jack Sommer tossed two scoring passing and added another one rushing.
William Butler rushed for 245 yards and two touchdowns, but it would not be enough as Aransas Pass fell to Pleasanton 38-19. Jared Longoria scored on a one yard run for the other Panther touchdown.
Ingleside pulled away from Beeville 30-14 as Marquis Barrole rushed for 99 yards for the Mustangs. Tyler Hernandez added two rushing scores, Jacob Adame added a one yard TD and David McHugh caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Tristan Barajas for Ingleside. Lonnie Jordan kicked field goals of 34 and 30 yards and Frankie Gutierrez, who had 94 yards rushing, had the lone Trojan touchdown on a 13-yard run.
John Paul II capitalized on six Benavides fumbles to cruise to a 30-16 win over the Eagles. QB Blake McKinzie passed for 92 yards and rushed for 86 and two touchdowns to lead the Centurions. Jose Trevino added 63 yards rushing and opened the scoring with a four yard run. Robert Garza led the Eagles with 86 yards rushing while John Gallardo rushed for one score and David Nerio caught a 22-yard pass from Gallardo for the final Benavides score.
George West pounded Zapata for 346 yards rushing in their 50-20 win. Jacob Almaguer led the ‘Horns with 139 yards rushing and one score while Bobby Torres added two touchdowns. Seth Pipkin rushed for 69 yards and also had one touchdown.
CC King's comeback

The King Mustangs scored twice in the 4th quarter to rally past Victoria West 14-13. West took a 13-0 lead on a 16 yard pass from Kyle Motal to Seth Harrison and on a three yard run by Chris Franklin in the third. Dezi Rodriquez scored the Mustangs first TD from seven yards, then Rodolfo Alonzo dashed 80-yards for another score. Alonzo finished with 122 yards rushing and Rodriquez added 70 more.
Gregory-Portland captured the 39th Annual Battle of the Bridge, defeating Carroll 20-7. The Wildcats mixed things well, rushing for 167 yards and passing for 156 while the defense turned in another solid effort. Roman Rodriquez had a 2-yard score on the opening drive that took nearly seven minutes. Kyle Fishbeck, who completed 14 of 20 passes, followed with a one yard touchdown run and Justin McArthur caught a 12-yard scoring pass from Fishbeck to make it 20-0 at the half. The Tigers lone score came in the fourth when Jarvis Luckerson scored from eight yards out. Luckerson finished with 51 yards rushing to lead the Tigers.
Calallen bounced back to defeat Victoria East 39-35 after falling behind 21-0 after one quarter. Calallen rushed for 427 yards, led by Given MClure with 207 yards including scoring runs of 60 and 65 yards. Buddy Wright added 137 yards and one score and Tanner Sparks finished with 85 yards on the ground and passed for a 10-yard TD pass to Nick Ginn.
Flour Bluff picked up their first win, defeating Sharyland 56-24. The Hornets rushed for 466, led by Trenton Bailey with 128 and Brandon Villarreal added 126 more and two scores. Kolton Mims added 108 more yards on the ground and scored three times.
Port Lavaca Calhoun rushed for 349 yards as they pounded Tuloso-Midway 51-20. Brandon Griffith led the Sandcrabs with 102 yards and two touchdowns while Joseph Bargas rushed for two scores and completed his lone pass to Derek Sowa for 83 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Iglesias completed 17 of 34 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Kenny Smith added 103 yards rushing and one touchdown for the Warriors.
Alice fell to Port Arthur Memorial 48-19 last Saturday. Trailing 14-0 A.J. Perez finally got the Coyotes on the board with a eight yard run. Later Mikey Lopez, who finished with 119 yards rushing, scored from 10-yards out. The Coyotes final score came when Robert Castillo caught a 29-yard TD pass from Miguel Avila, who completed 5 of 6 passes for 48 yards. Castillo finished with four catches for 88 yards to lead Alice.
The Rockport-Fulton Pirates remained unbeaten after their 37-24 win over Moody. Jacob Romero finished with 115 yards rushing with scoring runs of 25 and 61 yards. Stratton Williams added 103 yards with an 80-yard TD run and Justin Daniel finished with 78 yards and one score. Moody’s Dorian Johnson finished with 120 yards rushing and passed for 78 yards and one score. Anthony Martinez added 163 yards passing and one touchdown.
CLASS 3A, 2A, 1A
State Ranked Refugio finally got going in the second half as they cruised past Robstown 36-6. Shiloh Whetsel led the Bobcats with 95 yards rushing with two scores and Draigon Silvas added 85 yards with one touchdown. Marquise Brown (85-yard interception return) and Bryan Castellano (76-yard fumble return) added defensive scores. Robstown’s Randy Flored led the way for the Pickers with 116 yards, but Robstown managed just two field goals by Jesus Guerrrero for their only points.
Mathis pounded Kingsville for 434 yards rushing as they cruised to a 64-37 win. Four different Pirates rushed for over 100 yards, led by Donnie Butler with 177, Levi Mair had 122 yards, Rashad Washing ton added 115 and Julian Guerra added 107 yards. Butler had three rushing scores and caught one scoring pass from Gabriel Alvarado while Washington had two running scores and hauled in a 66-yard pass for another touchdown.
Riviera had little trouble disposing of Natalia 42-0. Adrian Caballero finished with 201 yards rushing and three scores and Heston Van Fleet passed for 152 yards and one touchdown.
Three Rivers defeated Jourdanton 28-7 as Larry Hatten rushed for 120 yards and Ian Smith added 64 yards and two touchdowns.
Ben Bolt got 303 yards passing from Aaron Bueno as the defeated Benavides 49-6. Bueno passed rushed for two touchdowns and passed for four more to lead Ben Bolt.
Skidmore-Tynan won their first game fo the season, defeating Taft 27-18. Zach Mengers led the Bobcats with two rushing scores and hauled in a 24-yard pass for another score from Derek Bogges. Martin Gomez led the Greyhounds with 102 yards rushing and one score and Jonathan Acosta added 245 yards passing and one touchdown.
William Butler score two touchdowns and rushed for 91 yards as Aransas Pass beat Banquete 24-13. Jared Longoria led the Panthers with 140 yards on the ground and scored the games first touchdown.

King rebounded from a loss with an easy 54-14 win over Laredo United South. The Mustangs tagged South for 472 yards rushing, led by Dezi Rodriquez (113 yards), Julian Bost (110 yards) and Brandon Harris with 101 more yards on the ground. Rodriquez had three touchdown runs, Bost added two scores and Johans Bravo returned the opening kick 98 yards for the games first score.
Carroll got blanked by Harlingen 42-0 on Saturday night. The Tigers never got things rolling on offense as they managed 164 yards of total offense while the Carroll defense surrendered over 400 total yards. Jarvis Luckerson led the Tiger ground game with 42 yards while Jonathan Tirner completed 8 of 17 passes for 53 yards and was intercepted three times.
Gregory-Portland defeated Calallen 13-9 in a defensive battle. The G-P defense held Calallen to 210 yards of offense, 87 of which came on their lone scoring drive. After a scoreless first half G-P got on the board first when Kyle Fishbeck scored from one-yards out after he connected with Justin McArthur on a long pass. McArthur then followed with a one-yard score. Calallen pulled within 13-7 late in the fourth when Buddy Wright scored from 2-yards out. Wright finished with 50 yards rushing while QB Tanner Sparks completed 12 of 29 passes for 132 yards. G-P was led by McArthur who finished with 46 yards rushing and caught four passes for 106 more yards. Fishbeck connected on 11 of 20 passes for 163 yards.
Beeville got a late score from QB Brooks Holder to defeat West Oso 15-8. The Bears opened the scoring when Andrew Lopez caught a 10-yard pass from Julian Chase. The Trojans answered in the second when Aaron Castilla hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass from Holder, who added 59 yards rushing. Darnell Butler led the Bears with 85 yards rushing and Darius Dorsey added 81 for West Oso.
Victoria East continued to look good as they defeated Kingsville 55-13. Jonathan Garner led the Titans with 127 yards rushing and two touchdowns. QB Ervin Yates added 59 yards on the ground and completed all four of his passes for 172 yards, including scoring passes of 76 and 47 yards. Demetre Richardson led the Brahmas with 45 yards rushing while John Houston and Javiel Rojas each had scoring runs for Kingsville.
Rey Rodriquez passed for 297 yards and four touchdowns as the Ray Texans stunned Port Lavaca Calhoun 36-35. Rodriquez completed scoring passes to Reed Clemmons, Luke Moffitt and a pair to David Black for the Texans. Moffitt finished with six catches for 117 yards and Johnny Rodela had five snags for 96 yards. Blake Griffith led the Sandcrabs with 272 yards rushing with four touchdowns.
Alice bounced back from a loss with a 57-34 win over Weslaco. Mikey Lopez led the Coyotes with 166 yards rushing and one score and Steve Villarreal added four rushing touchdowns for Alice.
Rockport-Fulton remained unbeaten after their stunning 24-0 win over Flour Bluff. The Pirates hit the Hornets for 241 yards rushing led by Justin Daniel with 88 yards and Jacob Romero with 69 more. Daniel had a 10-yard scoring run to start things off and Romero closed the scoring with a one–yard score. In between Tyler Hull had a one-yard score and J.C. Breeding added a 22-yard FG. The Hornets got 97 yards on the ground from Trenton Bailey and he completed 4 of 12 passes for 50 yards.
Ingleside pounded on Tuloso-Midway 42-14 as Matt McHugh rushed for 102 yards and passed for 149 more yards. McHugh had scoring runs of 41 and 51 yards while Tyler Hernandez added two scores for the Mustangs. T-M managed just 182 yards of offense, Kenny Smith led the ground game with 48 yards and Jonathan Iglesias added 108 yards passing for the Warriors.
Robstown pounded out 361 yards rushing as the cruised past Moody 35-14. Marty Gutierrez led the Pickers with 181 yards rushing with scoring runs of 11 and 33 yards. Alex Marroquin and Randy Flores added scoring runs and Trey Leal caught a 46-yard scoring pass from Marroquin. Moody opened the scoring when Jordan Pratt caught a 31-yard pass from Anthony Martinez, who passed for 211 yards.
Sinton opened their season after a bye week with a 24-13 win over Hondo. Carson Cave completed 14 of 23 passes for 195 yards and rushed for 86 yards to lead the Pirates. Keith Garcia finished with 135 yards rushing, including a 95-yard TD run. Anthony Banda finished with five catches for 57 yards and a score, Jeremy Laws had two receptions for 48 yards and Ramsey Rivera caught two more for 30 yards.
Benavides got a 73 yard kickoff return by Robert Garza and David Nerio added a nine-yard score as the Eagles defeated Premont 14-7. Alex Garcia had the lone Cowboy score on a 15 yard run.
Refugio continued to rack up the points as they defeated Halletsville 70-26. The Bobcats finished with 549 yards of offense, led by Shiloh Whetsel with 144 yards and three touchdowns.
Taft defeated Banquete 22-14, led by an 82-yard fumble return for a score by Johnathan Cantu. Jonathan Acosta hauled in a 46-yard scoring pass from Martin Gomez, who capped the win with a 17-yard rushing score. Jacob Gonzales scored on runs of 21 and 41 yards for the Bulldogs.
Mathis held Bishop to 116 yards of offense while rushing for 442 yards as they defeated the Badgers 62-6.
Riviera upended Woodsboro 28-0 as Adrian Caballero rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Heston Van Fleet and Gilbert Arollo added scoring runs for the Seahawks.
Ben Bolt got 267 yards passing from Aaron Bueno as they defeated Lasara 49-0. Bueno rushed for two scores, passed for three and returned an interception 66 yards for another score.
Bobby Torres rushed for 165 yards, including a 69-yard scoring run as George West defeated Goliad 21-6. Seth Pipken added two rushing touchdowns for the Longhorns.
CC Carroll wins its opener

The 2010 season finally got underway, but there were few surprises in South Texas. Calallen and Carroll opened with wins, but the team most figured to be one of the better teams in the area took it on the chin.
CC Carroll jumped to a quick lead, but nearly gave the game away as the held on to defeat cross town rival CC Ray 49-41. The Texans opened the scoring when Reed Clemons caught the first of three TD passes by Rey Rodriquez. Leon Perez scored three times and Jonathan Turner added two more as the Tigers jumped to a 49-14 lead late in the third. Rodriquez then connected twice with Luke Moffitt and Ashton Benavidez added another Ray score to pull the Texans within eight as time dwindled off the clock.
Javis Luckerson, who had one score, led the Tigers with 132 yards rushing followed by Turner with 102 and Perez added 92 more as Carroll finished with 362 yards on the ground. Meanwhile Rodriquez completed 29 of 38 passes for 436 yards, led by David Black, who caught 13 passes for 164 yards.
Calallen came out in mid-season form in their opener as they raced past CC King 35-10. The Wildcats rushed for 158 yards and passed for another 258 while their defense held the Mustangs without an offensive score all night. Tanner Sparks completed 21 of 26 passes for 258 yards, hitting Given McClure eight times for 96 yards and Hayden Woods three times for 68 more yards. Marcus Price, who caught one TD pass, added five receptions for 70 more yards. Buddy Wright led the Calallen ground game with 66 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown run. Dezi Rodriquez led the Mustangs with 68 yards rushing and he also completed a pair of passes for 60 yards, but he was intercepted twice.
Alice dropped their season opener, falling to Laredo Alexander 41-37 despite the Coyotes 590 yards of total offense. Michael Arredondo and Mikey Lopez each rushed for 122 yards and Steve Villarreal added 88 more on the ground. Arredondo also had 109 yards receiving, including an 80 yard scoring pass from Alex Ponce, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 205 yards. Villarreal and Lopez each added a pair of scoring runs for Alice.
The Moody defense held West Oso to 199 yards of offense as the Trojans defeated the Bears 26-18. Dorian Johnson rushed for 53 yards and scored on runs of 3, 1 and five yards for the Trojans. Anthony Martinez added 144 yards through the air, including a 24-yard scoring strike to Jordan Pratt, who finished with 82 yards receiving. Darius Dorsey led the Bears, catching and 87-yard scoring pass from Julian Chase and he also added a one yard rushing touchdown. Darnell Butler added a 12-yard touchdown run for West Oso.
Port Lavaca Calhoun shredded the Flour Bluff defense for 347 yards rushing as the defeated the Hornets 22-8. Jeremy Loya finished with 139 yards rushing including an 81-yard gallop in the final quarter. Brandon Griffith added 88 yards and a score while Joseph Bargas tacked on 77 more yards with another score. The Hornets lone score came on a 27-yard score from Trenton Bailey, but the Hornets struggled most of the night, committing three turnovers.
Gregory-Portland opened its campaign with a 30-29 win over Port Neches-Groves at the Texas Football Classic in San Antonio. G-P fell into a quick 14-0 hole after one quarter, but quarterback Kyle Fishbeck would take things into his own hands. The senior passed for 281 yards and three scores and added another rushing touchdown. Fishbeck connected with Stephen Roggeman (33-yards), Justin McArthur (27-yards) and Jimmy Salinas from 71-yards as the Wildcats took their first lead of the game at 27-22. The Indians regained the lead at 29-27 before Salinas drilled a 38-yard FG with just over five minutes left in the game.
Rockport-Fulton opened their Class 3A campaign with an easy 49-6 win over Orange Grove. The Pirates were realigned to 3A last February and made the transition a smooth one. The Pirates pounded the Bull dogs for 416 yards on the ground, led by QB Stratton Williams with 210 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Daniel added 100 yards rushing, including an 82-yard scoring run. Meanwhile the Pirate defense held the Bulldogs to 141 yards of total offense. Caleb Cawyer led them with 39 yards rushing while Mark Vasquez had their only score on the night, rushing in from 4-yards out as time ran out in the game.
Mathis rallied late to defeat Tuloso-Midway 29-22. Levi Mair led the way with 165 yards rushing while Donnie Butler added 137 more yards on the ground, including one score. Rashad Washington, who finished with 88 yards on the ground, added scoring runs of 15 and 23 yards. Jonathan Iglesias led the Warriors with 71 yards rushing and completed 14 of 24 passes for 246 yards. Iglesias had a 51-yard scoring run and completed a 67 yard scoring pass to Kenny Smith, who also scored on a 12 yard run.
Robstown opened their campaign with a 29-20 win over Rio Hondo at Calallen Saturday night. Randy Flores led the Pickers with 143 yards rushing that included scoring runs of 26 and 34 yards. Teammate Alex Marroquin added 114 yards on the ground, 87 on a touchdown gallop, and he added 73 yards passing to lead the Pickers.
Taft needed over-time, but they finally escaped with a 32-26 win over John Paul II. The Greyhounds rushed for 236 yards and passed for another 158 as they fought off a late Centurion rally. Jonathan Acosta completed 17 of 30 passes for Taft, hitting Leonard Vasquez six times for 68 yards and one score while Jonathan Cantu finished with 169 yards rushing, including scoring runs of 68 and 4 yards. Blake McKenzie led JP with 147 yards passing, completing 7 of 28 passes. Nick Vidal led the Centurions with three catches for 84 yards. Jose Trevino added two rushing scores and Logan Hatcher had one reception for a score.
The Refugio and Rice Consolidated game was suppose to be an early showdown of state ranked teams, but the Bobcats proved early on they will be the team to beat as the defeated RC 50-28. Shiloh Whetsel led the Bobcats with 142 yards rushing on just four carries, one for a score and Draigon Silvas added 100 more yards on the ground and one touchdown.
George West’s Cayleb Holt scored three times to lead the Longhorns past Three Rivers 20-15. Holt finished with just 35 yards on the ground, but it was his 47-yard pass reception for a score from Seth Pipken with less that two minutes left that lifted the Longhorns. Ty Brwon and Ian Smith each had four-yard scoring runs for the Bulldogs and Larry Hatten finished with 89 yards rushing for Three Rivers.
Riviera opened with an easy 35-14 win over Bishop as quarterback Heston Van Fleet connected with Chris Foster three times for scores. Van Fleet finished with 127 yards passing while Adrian Caballero added 168 yards rushing and two scores. Bishop got a 10-yard scoring run from Eric Barrientes and Jacob Beltran returned a kick 81-yards for the other Badger score.
Banquete defeated Falfurrias 37-7 as D.J. Harris passed for 120 yards and Chisolm Wright rushed for 64 yards and two scores to lead the Bulldogs. Matthew Rodriquez, who passed for 117 yards, connected with Marcus Cortez for the lone Jersey score.
Jacob Cantu passed for 153 yards and three touchdowns to lead Freer past Benavides 55-22. Joseph Clark added 71 yards rushing and added five scores for the Buckaroos. David Nerio led the Eagles with 108 yards rushing and had a 22-yards scoring run.
Aaron Bueno returned in fine fashion as he passed for 260 yards leading Ben Bolt to a 42-13 win over Premont. Bueno tossed four scoring passes, three of which were caught by Andres Alaniz who finished with 173 yards receiving. Shane Chapa had a 14 yard run for a score and Israel Chapa hauled in a 31-yard scoring pass from Chris Ruiz for the Cowboys.
