Smoak signals

As I mentioned a week or two ago, John Tyler's 0-3 record was more than deceiving. The Lions opened with losses to Lufkin, Longview and Tyler Lee. Not many others would be much better than 0-3 after those three. And, although Tyler Lee is 1-4, that's JT's crosstown rival and all bets are off.
Dereck Rush is in his fifth year as head football coach at John Tyler and he's done more than just stabilize the program. I remember when former Tyler I.S.D. athletic director Danny Long promoted Rush to replace Thomas Brooks who left for Jasper High School. Most of the John Tyler community wanted Coach Rush to get the promotion but not everyone was sure about his ability to take control of a program.
Danny Long has been around the block a few times and I trusted his judgment, and Long was right, Rush has been a perfect fit for the Cujo family.
John Tyler had only one winning season after Allen Wilson left for Dallas Carter after the 2001 season (Thomas Brooks 8-3 in 2005) until Rush took control. JT was 6-6 in Rush's first year, and they're coming off back-to-back 12-2 seasons and despite their 0-3 start before their blowout win against Hallsville (65-6), I think it's safe to say the Lions will make another deep run this season.
-----
There are a lot of teams taking their bye week to get set for their respective district openers, but there are a couple of matchups to focus on this week:
In Class 5-A, Copperas Cove thumped Belton, 37-15 and now travel to Temple where the Wildcats are coming off a heartbreaking loss at A&M Consolidated. First-year Temple Head Coach Mike Spradlin has his team in most every game, not quite there yet, but getting closer.
In Class 4-A, one of the best games in the state, (5-0) Mesquite Poteet @ (5-0) Corsicana. Corsicana mauled Poteet a year ago, 44-10, but lost in the opening round of the playoffs to Bastrop. Meanwhile, Poteet, under first year head coach Randy Jackson lost the next week too (West Mesquite 28-10), before starting one of the most miraculous post-season runs I have ever seen. Poteet won seven straight before losing to eventual state champion Aledo, 29-27 in the Class 4-A semifinals.
District 16-3A was the best 3-A district in Texas a year ago, Henderson and Carthage swept the Class 3-A State Championships, Gilmer went three rounds deep and Pittsburg (6-4) probably would have won most any other district championship but watched the playoffs from home. Well, 16-3A might be as good or better than a year ago, Henderson is mauling everyone, including a 56-13 rout of a pretty good Liberty-Eylau program on Friday night. Gilmer wasn't to thrilled with being left out of the championship discussion a year ago---and they're thumping people too. Carthage lost back-to-back games to Lindale and Chapel Hill, but they did that a year ago before making their great run to a third consecutive state championship. Pittsburg and Gladewater are both 4-1, and Spring Hill (1-4) has to wonder why they grabbed the short straw being place in that district.
And, Chapel Hill in 3-A has to say, "Hey, what about us?" Well, they're rolling again too…and just send a statement to everyone with a dominating 51-29 victory against Lindale on Friday. Chapel Hill has battled through serious injuries, including their starting QB Avery Saenz and tailback Andrew Tucker, but they just keep winning. Tucker came back this week and along with Rex Rollins ran for 100+-yards, Anthony Kincade has replaced Saenz at quarterback and has the luxury of a great running game (286-yards vs. Lindale). Chapel Hill running back Jay Reagan returned a kick 104-yards for a touchdown, a week after rushing for over 100-yards in a win against Hallsville. Two weeks ago, Lindale beat Carthage, but took it on the chin against Chapel Hill.
A quick note in Class 2-A, where Rogers is unbeaten at 5-0 with back-to-back thrillers against Mart (Won/43-42) and Franklin (Won/46-42), and it won't get any easier this week when they travel to 5-0 Thorndale.
How about Tenaha, year-in and year-out, one of the best Class 1-A programs in Texas. And, after a one and done in the playoffs a year ago, the Tigers appear loaded for a deep run in 2011. It's early, but Tenaha is outscoring their opponents 45-13, including a clutch win against Garrison (21-20) two weeks ago. The eye-opener was a 54-7 rout of perennial power Alto the week before the Garrison win.
I mentioned defending 3-A State Champion Carthage is 3-2, and so is defending Class 1-A Division I State Champion Mart. The proud Panthers lost in a heartbreaker two weeks ago in a Classic against Rogers (43-42) and lost in the final minute to Goldthwaite (20-17) last Friday. Goldthwaite beat Mart a year ago in the non-district schedule before Mart won it all against Goldthwaite for the 1-A State Championship.
And, finally a shout out to Live Oak, a private school in Waco that is 5-0 and that includes an impressive 63-24 victory against Dickinson Pine Street on Thursday.
Live Oak is led by Head Coach Jordan Barker, and when Barker isn't coaching his football team, he's a major part of the Game-Day operations and events at Floyd Casey Stadium or the Ferrell Center when the Baylor Bears are playing football or basketball (men's and women's). Live Oak found Dickinson Pine Street as a replacement for a game that was canceled and it was expected to be a step up for the Falcons, but with the score 26-24 Live Oak, they turned on the after-burners and rolled to a lopsided victory. Up next, (5-0) Live Oak vs. (4-0) Methodist Children's Home from across town.
One note, I'm traveling throughout next weekend so I'm not sure if I'll have much of a summary next time around, but I will include everything else that's listed below.
Coaches Feedback:
Each week, I ask the coaches throughout East and Central Texas to send me a unique or human interest story. I received this one from Chuck Griffin, AD/Head Football Coach at Troup High School.
Smoaky,
As you know we have had fires all over Texas. Seeing the destruction surrounding the Bastrop area, people in our community were anxious to try and help in some way. After much thought and the fires all over our area, we decided to try and help locally to prevent this happening here.
Most of the fire departments in rural East Texas are volunteer fire departments and run on small, almost insignificant budgets. We decided to try and help the two volunteer programs in Smith and North Cherokee County. For nearly two weeks, they fought fires daily around our area. And because these were not typical East Texas fires, we found out there budgets and supplies were depleted.
As a district and an athletic department we decided to help. We started a fill the boot campaign on campus, but we did not stop there. We also opened the doors of all our athletic events free of charge last week. Instead of taking up a gate, we asked spectators to donate to the Fill the Boot Campaign.
In our middle school games last Thursday, our Volleyball games on Friday, and our Friday night home football game, we raised over $8000 to donate to the two fire departments. We are continuing to raise money through this week in our Fill the Boot Campaign and will donate this as well.
If we can help prevent the loss of one home in our area, we have made our drive successful.
Thank you for sharing.
Chuck Griffin, AD/Football Coach
Troup High School
