Leman Saunders of SixManFootball.com previews the state quarterfinals
It is now down to 8 teams in each division of Six-Man football battling it out for the two state titles.
In case you have not been keeping track of the Six-Man football playoffs, this is what you have missed:
Ira survived a squeaker against Crowell in Bi-District 52-43, with star six-man player and Texas’ all-time leading rusher Lance Morris racking up 386 yards rushing to officially pass Ken Hall on the all-time list. Ira would not be as lucky in the 2nd round suffering an upset at the hands of Rankin 58-38. Morris added 261 more yards to his career total in the loss, finishing with 11,866 yards rushing.
3 teams new to Six-Man football district play found themselves in the playoffs: Rotan, Lingelville, who both lost in Bi-District, and Savoy. Savoy entered the playoffs 9-0 and went on to win their Bi-District game over Walnut Springs 34-26, but then fell to Six-Man powerhouse Gordon in the 2nd round by a score of 66-21.
Gordon will now face another surprise team Santa Anna in one of the DI Quarter-Finals games in the eastern side of the bracket. Santa Anna’s only loss this season came at the hands of Rochelle in district play. Santa Anna made the playoffs out of that wild district which saw 3 teams tied for the championship with Santa Anna and Zephyr winning playoff spots and Rochelle sitting at home.
The other Eastern DI Quarter-Final match-up is Abbott versus Oakwood. Abbott has been here before while this is new territory for Oakwood. Oakwood has score 110 and 83 points in their two playoff games, while Abbott has only allowed 16 points in their two playoff victories (all 16 coming at the hands of Leverett’s Chapel in last week’s 62-16 win).
Now out West in DII…the school with the smallest enrollment (28) in the playoffs, Grandfalls-Royalty, is 12-0 after winning their first two playoff games, including a nail bitter 34-30 victory over Robert Lee in the 2nd round, setting up a rematch with district foe Balmorhea in the Quarter-Finals of DII. Grandfalls won the first meeting 46-0…in fact the only full game GFR has played this season was last week against Robert Lee…they have 45ed every other opponent.
The other game out West features DII newbie Follett (formerly a DI powerhouse) facing Motley County who is looking for a return trip to the state title game. This will be the first real test for Follett in the playoffs after mercy ruling both Groom and Amherst by scores of 52-7 and 68-23.
In the East side of DII, Strawn will also be playing against a familiar foe in their Quarter-Final showdown with Newcastle. Strawn 45ed Newcastle in week 5by a final score of 54-8. After that game Newcastle was 2-4, but since then they have found their stride winning 6 in a row including a big upset over undefeated Aspermont last week in round two by a score or 50-38. I don’t think Strawn will have it as easy with Newcastle this time.
Richland Springs has now won 42 games in a row. However that 42nd win was a little too close for the #1 team in DII. Richland Springs hosted Jonesboro last week and survived by a score of 64-48. The defending DII Champs now face undefeated Milford in the Quarter-Finals. This game could be a six-man instant classic!
Throckmorton rolled past six-man newbie Rotan in the 1st round, and in a much anticipated 2nd round match up, Throckmorton crushed the #1 ranked team Water Valley by the 45 point mercy rule 62-16. Throckmorton now faces Rankin who already has one upset victory in the post season.
The new #1 team in DI is Valley, who after an easy win in Bi-District (54-8 over Happy), played a tough game against Borden County in round two with Valley walking away by a score of 53-46. Valley now takes on Petersburg in a DI East Quarter-Final game. This is a week 7 rematch which Valley won 79-44 and has proven to be the only blemish on Petersburg’s record.
