#ThrowbackThursday: Leap Frog
A glimpse back at TCU recruiting efforts from 35 years ago.
Welcome to #ThrowbackThursday, a weekly glance back into the Dave Campbell's Texas Football archives for the unforgettable, the legendary and the often amazing items across DCTF's 55-year history.
For better or for worse, recruiting has become more and more a center-stage act of football. But before star ratings and "news" about scholarship offers and echo chambers devoted to telling fans exactly what they want to hear, recruiting was a lot more simple.
Which brings us to the 1979 edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, whose cover was graced by then-Texas Longhorn defensive lineman and soon-to-be NFL mainstay and professional wrestler Steve "Mongo" McMichael.
These days, recruits are pretty quickly identified by the schools and pursued subsequently. But back then, recruiting often involved a lot more give-and-take. In fact, many schools took out advertisements in magazines to solicit interested recruits into learning more about their school.
Which is why we have this gem of an ad from the 1979 edition, featuring TCU coach F.A. Dry. There's so much to love here, but my favorite part is the "space-age weight room" line. Just another relic of a bygone, simpler recruiting age.
