The fight for Texas' best mascot rolls on, and it's already getting interesting!

The Dave Campbell's Texas Football Mascot Madness Tournament, a battle to find out, once and for all, the best mascot in Texas, is rolling in the first round, and we have our first group of results. We had more than 10,000 votes! You can see the results in the bracket (which you can see here), but here's what happened:

Hutto Hippos def. Freeport Brazosport Exporters, 82% to 18%
Trent Gorillas def. Little River Academy Bumblebees, 60% to 40%
Fredericksburg Battlin' Billies def. Progreso Red Ants, 64% to 36%
Rotan Yellowhammers def. Grandview Zebras, 63% to 37%
Texas City Stingarees def. Port Isabel Tarpons, 60% to 40%
Winters Blizzards def. SA Central Catholic Buttons, 85% to 15%
Mesquite Skeeters def. Spearman Lynz, 75% to 25%
Cuero Gobblers def. Amarillo Golden Sandstorm, 57% to 43%

As you can see, a few surprises. We're surprised to see the Golden Sandstorm go down in the first round, but that just tells you the power of the Gobbler!

Here's the schedule of voting from here on out:

Today: Round 1 (Part 2)
May 12: Round of 16
May 14: Round of 8
May 16: Round of 4
May 20: Final Round
May 23: Winner announced

Without further ado, let's continue voting. You can vote below on the final eight first-round matchups in the DCTF Mascot Madness Tournament.

May the best mascot win!

I started collecting and reading the DCTF magazines back in the 70’s before I was a teen. I love this magazine and consider it the bible of Texas football.Kurt ,
