How do the Associated Press' high school rankings stack up against DCTF's?
Is there anything in sports that have launched more debates than rankings? The 2013 summer edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is 400 pages worth of football content – it’s probably as dense as it is big – and yet the one thing we hear more about than anything are the rankings, be they in the college or high school ranks.
With the football season just two weeks away, we’re starting to see all sorts of rankings pop up in both the high school and college realms, and it’s always fun to see how they compare to our own rankings.
The most notable statewide high school rankings – aside from DCTF’s, of course – come from the Associated Press, and sure enough, the AP released their high school football rankings last week.
Of course, the beauty of rankings – and what makes them so ripe for debate – is that there isn’t a correct answer. It’s all a matter of opinion – educated opinion, but opinion nonetheless.
So, let’s compare the AP’s opinion to our own, and see where the biggest differences and similarities lie!
(One note: if there’s multiple teams with the same rank, that’s because the AP’s voting system allows for ties. So, consider that.)
We’ll start with the Class 5A rankings for both the AP and DCTF.
|Galena Park North Shore||8||7|
Notable: There’s a lot of agreement here, especially in the Top 12, where we feature the same 12 teams (though not in the same order).
AP is higher on… Arlington Bowie, Arlington Martin, San Antonio O’Connor, Lufkin, Tyler Lee, Abilene Cooper.
DCTF is higher on… San Antonio Madison, San Antonio Brandeis.
Ranked by AP but not DCTF: San Antonio O’Connor, Lufkin, Tyler Lee, Abilene Cooper.
Ranked by DCTF but not AP: Spring Westfield (No. 15), Manvel (No. 19), The Woodlands (No. 21), La Porte (No. 23).
On to Class 4A!
|Humble Summer Creek||7||7|
|Wichita Falls Rider||10||9|
|Fort Bend Marshall||21||18|
|Corpus Christi Calallen||21||19|
|Fort Worth Southwest||25||NR|
Notable: The top 7 are exactly the same. That’s pretty darn remarkable.
AP is higher on… Georgetown, Manor, Leander Rouse, Birdville, Amarillo, Brenham, Fort Worth Southwest.
DCTF is higher on…Nederland, Fort Bend Marshall.
Ranked by AP but not DCTF: Leander Rouse, Birdville, Amarillo, Brenham, Fort Worth Southwest
Ranked by DCTF but not AP: Lucas Lovejoy (No. 22), Port Lavaca Calhoun (No. 24), Sulphur Springs (No. 25).
To 3A we go!
|Tyler Chapel Hill||22||23|
Notable: This is the only set of rankings in which DCTF and AP have a different No. 1 – we went with Carthage as our top squad, while the AP tabbed Stephenville.
AP is higher on… Navasota, Bellville, El Campo, Gatesville, Henderson, Shallowater, Gainesville.
DCTF is higher on… Port Isabel, Kennedale.
Ranked by AP but not DCTF: Gatesville, Shallowater.
Ranked by DCTF but not AP: Coldspring-Oakhurst (No. 15), La Grange (No. 19) Alvarado (No. 20).
Now, we head into Class 2A and Class 1A, and things change. DCTF divides them into divisions before ranking them – Division I and Division II get their own Top 10. The AP opts instead to just rank all of the 2A and 1A teams in one poll – Division I and Division II combined. There’s no right or wrong way; it’s just different.
So, we’re going to look at DCTF’s rankings and compare that to the AP’s, for the sake of clarity. And remember: the No. 8 team in the AP may, in fact, be the third-best team in their division.
|CLASS 2A DI||DCTF||AP||CLASS 2A DII||DCTF||AP|
Notable: The top two in Division I get the AP’s nod, but there’s some differences as you get down deeper. But there’s also a lot of agreement – every 2A team that we ranked finds its way into the AP’s rankings!
AP is higher on… Daingerfield, Corsicana Mildred.
DCTF is higher on… Arp, Teague, Centerville, Rogers.
Ranked by AP but not DCTF: Callisburg, White Oak, Elysian Fields, Hempstead, Hughes Springs, Lago Vista, Littlefield, Godley.
Finally, let’s wrap up with Class 1A.
|CLASS 1A DI||DCTF||AP||CLASS 1A DII||DCTF||AP|
Notable: The AP’s rankings definitely skew toward Division I, with seven of the Top 10 teams coming from the bigger division.
AP is higher on… Albany, Falls City, Hubbard.
DCTF is higher on… Springlake-Earth, Chilton, Wellington, Muenster, Burton.
Ranked by AP but not DCTF: Ganado, Italy, New Deal, Frost.
Ranked by DCTF but not AP: Springlake-Earth.
