TSWA All-State Teams
Look, I know that it’s been more than two months since the final game of the 2012 Texas high school football season. But the Texas Sports Writers Association takes its time to collate its All-State teams, making sure to get as many ballots from across the state as they can before releasing their picks for the best in each classification.
Well, on Saturday, the TSWA finally did release their annual All-State teams for all classes, from 5A down to 1A. We’ll get into it more tomorrow – the surprises, the snubs, everything –here are the picks for offensive and defensive player of the year in each class.
Class 5A: Katy RB Adam Taylor (OPOY); Katy DE Matt Dimon (DPOY)
Class 4A: Denton Guyer QB Jerrod Heard (OPOY); Lancaster DE Daeshon Hall and John Tyler DE Tyus Bowser (co-DPOY)
Class 3A: Navasota QB Kadarius Baker (OPOY); El Campo DL Cole Hunt and Navasota DL Jordan Wells (co-DPOY)
Class 2A: New Boston RB Damien Haskins (OPOY); Cameron Yoe LB Somari Wright (DPOY)
Class 1A: Stamford QB Hagen Hutchinson (OPOY); Munday DB Dee Paul (DPOY)
NFL Combine
The march toward April’s NFL Draft made a pivotal pit stop in Indianapolis this weekend, with the beginning of the NFL Combine, giving aspiring pros from across the nation a chance to show off their skills in measurements like the 40 yard dash, broad jump, vertical leap and more. Of course, the interview portion is also an important aspect of the Combine – each team can have 15 minutes with the player – as this is really the first chance for pro teams to get to know their potential future draft picks.
As you can imagine, there was a distinct Texas flavor to the Combine’s action this weekend. We’ll do a more complete recap on Wednesday after it wraps up (defensive linemen and linebackers perform today, with defensive backs on Tuesday), but here are some of the Texas-tied players making big noise at the Combine.
Texas WR Marquise Goodwin: Ran the Combine’s fastest 40-yard dash so far at 4.27 seconds. Also recorded the Combine’s second-best broad jump at 11 feet.
Texas A&M WR Ryan Swope: Tied for the second-fasted 40 at the Combine at 4.34 seconds. Also recorded the 10th-best vertical leap at 37 inches, and tied for the eighth-best broad jump at 10 feet, 5 inches.
Arkansas RB Knile Davis: The Fort Bend Marshall product ran the second-fastest 40 among running backs at 4.37 seconds.
TCU WR Josh Boyce: Ran the 6th-fasted 40 overall at 4.38 seconds. Also notched the Combine’s fourth-best broad jump at 10 feet, 11 inches.
SMU DE Margus Hunt: Tied with Missouri Southern State’s Brandon Williams for the most repetitions on the bench press (at 225 pounds), notching 38 reps.
Texas A&M RB Christine Michael: Performed the Combine’s best vertical jump, leaping 43 inches, a full 3.5 inches more than the second-best. Also recorded the eighth-best broad jump at 10 feet, 5 inches.
Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead: The Plano product notched the Combine’s 5th-best vertical, leaping 39 inches. Also recorded the Combine’s eighth-best broad jump at 10 feet, 5 inches.
Recruiting
It was a relatively quiet weekend on the recruiting scene – maybe everyone was gearing up for the Oscars? – but we did have one big piece of news, as Longview defensive tackle Zaycoven Henderson committed to TCU. Henderson was a major part of what was a fearsome front seven for the Lobos, and it’s no wonder teams were after him: his frame at 6-2 and 270 pounds is perfectly suited to fill out and be a potentially dominant force in the middle. The 2014 class of defensive linemen isn’t as strong as the 2013 class in Texas – the ’13 DL class was ridiculous – but Henderson is one of the true gems of the class, and now is pledged to Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs.
