NCAA rules in Muschamp's favor
2010-03-10
By Dennis Hall / Texas Football ... Even while in the midst of spring practice, college coaches are never far removed from their recruiting duties.
Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp received some important news from the NCAA on Tuesday. Muschamp will be allowed to follow the same recruiting rules as other NCAA assistant coaches for at least one year despite a new NCAA rule limiting off-campus recruiting contact for so-called "coaches in waiting." The rule only affects two schools: UT and Maryland.
The new NCAA rule states that coaches in waiting are limited to one off-campus visit with a recruit, and they can't make that visit during the all-important period of April 15-May 31. Other assistants can make two off-campus trips per recruit.
Texas and Maryland were given one year to find a work around for the rule. That means Muschamp's "coach in waiting" title might have to be removed as a formality, unless the NCAA is willing to provide a waiver.
