With the DCTF Winter Edition looming, a sneak peek at our way-too-early 2014 6A rankings.

We’re a mere two weeks away from the release of the 2014 Winter Edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, DCTF’s season recap of all things football in Texas in 2013. From high school to college, from big schools to small schools, nobody helps you relive an unbelievable football season like DCTF, and the Winter Edition – hitting shelves Jan. 24, but available for pre-order now – is the perfect capper for a terrific season.

In anticipation of the magazine’s release, we’re giving readers a sneak-peak of things they can read once they get their hands on a copy. Today: how about an early look-ahead to next year’s Class 6A rankings?

In every classification, from 5A down to six-man, we give readers a way-too-early look at the 2014 high school football season. So, without further ado, here’s what DCTF has to say about Class 5A (eight months out, of course, and obviously subject to change).

  1. Allen
    Team Strength:
    QB play
    Star Player: Kyler Murray
Texas’ best player and unmatched depth make the Eagles a prime three-peat candidate
  2. Cedar Hill
    Team Strength:
    Star Player: Damarkus Lodge
The defense has some holes, but the offensive skill players return almost intact
  3. Katy
    Team Strength:
    Running game
    Star Player: Rodney Anderson
Defense and offensive line take a hit, but bringing back Anderson and Kyle Porter is huge
  4. Southlake Carroll
    Team Strength:
    Star Player: Ryan Agnew
Quarterback stability with Agnew is key, and Carroll’s earned any benefit of the doubt
  5. Lake Travis
    Team Strength:
    Star Player: John Brewer
The return of QB Dominic De Lira and most of the secondary is crucial for the Cavs
  6. Manvel
    Team Strength:
    Star Player: D’Eriq King
Both King and top WR Gary Haynes return, plus key pieces on defense
  7. Cibolo Steele
    Team Strength:
    LB play
    Star Player: Marquee Allison
Losing RB Justin Stockton hurts, but an experienced defense could carry the load
  8. Galena Park North Shore
    Team Strength:
    Rushing attack
    Star Player: Tristan Houston
The Mustangs will be able to run the ball in 2014; can they replace key pieces on D?
  9. Euless Trinity
    Team Strength:
    Star Player: Ja’Ron Wilson
You know what you’ll get with Trinity: big OLs, speedy backs and solid defense
  10. Highland Park (4A)
    Team Strength:
    Passing game
    Star Player: Brooks Burgin
The Scots should make the leap to 6A, and they could make an immediate impact
