(Monday, October 24th)

There was something in the water throughout East Texas on Friday.

But, the main spotlight this week is on Class 2-A Redwater High School because the Dragons beat Daingerfield 43-26. I received a pair of email from fans of Redwater football last week, "Smoaky, don't be surprised if Redwater beats Daingerfield." And, the other, "I want to be the first to tell you Daingerfield will go down against Redwater on Friday night, mark my words."

Well, as you can imagine, I receive a lot of email from rambunctious fans throughout the year, most of them who know what they're talking about and a handful who like to make some crazy predictions---that don't come true and I never hear back from them.

I knew Daingerfield wasn't the same team that won three-straight state championships, but this is a Redwater program that had NEVER beat Daingerfield, and no matter what was going with the Tigers this season, they hadn't lost a game to a Class 2-A team in 5-YEARS.

Well, those streaks are over.

Redwater 43, Daingerfield 26 (Final)

I spoke with Redwater AD/Football Coach Jeff Stine on Saturday about the win, "It was a huge win for this program, probably without a doubt the biggest win in program history and as far as I know the first win ever for this program against Daingerfield and the first district loss for the Tigers in 5-years."

Stine, who was obviously pumped-up continued, "Our players and coaching staff worked so hard throughout the off-season and we really worked on our players mentality and constantly told them they could win a game like this and that we can take this program to the next level. We played with incredble intensity, fire, and passion and we just never quit."

Stine also knows there is now a bullseye on his team's back, "I told our kids to enjoy this victory because they earned the right to be happy, but they know to be right back in this fieldhouse on Monday because we have more work to do."

This is a Redwater football program that lost to Daingerfield in 2010, 47-0. This is a program that has never had more than 8-wins in any season (1989, 2004), only three playoff appearances (1993, 2004, and 2010), and a program that has never won a playoff game. And, this is a program that was 1-39 from 1998-2002, but over the past four years under Stine, the Dragons are 5-5, 6-4, 5-5, and now 5-3 with two games left in the regular season.

Meanwhile, Whitehouse quarterback Hunter Taylor passed for 534-yards and a state record-tying 9-TD's in a 70-48 win against Pine Tree, with six of those TD's going to wide receiver Dylan Cantrell, who just last week caught 15-passes in a win against Nacogdoches.

How about Winnsboro running back Brandon Green's school-record 380-yards and 4-TD's on just 19-carries in a 55-12 win against Grand Saline. That’s a ridiculous 20-yards PER CARRY. As a team, Winnsboro ran for more than 600-yards against the Indians.

In Class 3-A, don't sleep on three-time defending state champion Carthage. Despite three losses (most recently last week to Gilmer, 39-36 and earlier to unbeaten Chapel Hill and once-beaten Lindale), the Bulldogs flexed their muscles against previously-unbeaten Henderson, 42-21, in a battle of the defending state champions in Class 3-A. So, what does Henderson do now? They play unbeaten Gilmer this Friday---what a great race in District 16-3A.

When the UIL has increased their number of playoff teams in each district over the years, I've been as outspoken as anyone about "how many is too many?" Well, there is no doubt in my mind, Mesquite Horn is the best two-win team in America, not Texas, America. The Jaguars, who went four rounds deep in the playoffs a year ago are 2-6 with back-to-back losses to Longview (38-30) and unbeaten DeSoto (56-50 in OT). Many media outlets had the DeSoto final as 59-53, but after watching film the next day, it was discovered the scoreboard added three points inadvertantly for both teams in the fourth-quarter. I guess the scoreboard operator just felt like, "what the heck, someone must have scored something."

In Central Texas, there were some results that most likely decided district championships, including Copperas Cove's 23-21 win against A&M Consolidated in District 12-5A, La Vega's 28-14 victory against Robinson gave the Pirates a one-game lead over the Rockets and also Lorena, the Leopards came from 14-points down to stun China Spring, 24-21. It's the fourth-straight gut-wrenching loss to Mark Bell's Cougars, who have been beaten, 21-17 by Brownwood, 38-35 on a last second 47-yard field goal by Gatesville, 26-19 by Robinson and now another game-winning field goal with :00 on the clock. After thirteen consecutive playoff seasons, the Cougars will miss the playoffs for a second straight year.

And, Mart thumped Riesel to take total command of District 8-1A in Class 1-A, Division I, and Fairfield beat Palestine to take control of 20-3A.

And, what an ending in Stephenville, where the Yellowjackets shocked Killeen, 37-33. Killeen stopped Stephenville inside the Kangaroos 5-yard line with two minutes left to play, but after not being able to move the ball much (own 11-yard line), Roos head coach Sam Jones, leading 33-28, elected to take an automatic safety instead of punting from his own end zone. Only problem, Stephenville's Preston Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 60-yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown…stunning Killeen, 37-33.

Stephenville, now 7-1 and 3-0 in District 8-4A, will host Midway (6-2, 2-1) on Friday. Waco High is also tied for the district lead (6-2, 3-0) after a pulverizing 71-0 win against undermanned San Angelo Lake View.

And, if you don't mind---a little preaching from me. How in the world does Lake View end up in the same district with Killeen, Waco High, University, Midway and Stephenville? There SHORTEST trip is 4-plus hours and they have no one within their own area to make an easy trip. It's one thing for the schools in the same district to make one trip out to San Angelo once in two years, it's another thing that Lake View has to make sometimes three trips to Killeen, Waco or Stephenville each year---absolutely ridiculous. I know the West Texas schools are used to long road trips, but in this case, the UIL really dropped the ball---regardless of their reasoning.
