The most important job the Longhorns need to accomplish this spring is to get sophomore quarterback Garrett Gilbert prepared for the mammoth task of replacing Colt McCoy under center.
So far, so good.
The coaches say they've been pleased with Gilbert's performance so far in spring drills. He seems to have a strong understanding of the offense and has shown poise and leadership ability. For his part, Gilbert said he is gaining confidence each day.
"I feel like we've got pretty good chemistry as an offense," Gilbert told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "We're doing a good job [of] getting our timing down right now."
With Gilbert ready to take over, the other QB question concerns the two incoming freshmen, Connor Wood and Case McCoy. Both have enrolled early and are participating in spring drills. Coach Mack Brown indicated that it's likely one will redshirt and the other will compete with Sherrod Harris for the backup role to Gilbert.
Texas is about halfway through with spring drills and will wrap up with its spring game on April 4.
