There’s good news in Waco – QB Robert Griffin was back in action Tuesday for the start of spring practice, and he looked like the same player he was before his knee injury. In other words, he looked great.
Griffin has been going through extensive rehab sessions since having surgery last fall, but this was his first on-field action with teammates. He sat out team drills but otherwise was right in the middle of the action, looking comfortable as he threw passes and moved around in the pocket.
Coach Art Briles agreed that Griffin looked good, and he was enthusiastic about the rest of the team as well. Coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons, Baylor appears to have the potential for a breakthrough season in 2010, but it all hinges on Griffin’s health, as well as replacing all-conference defenders Joe Pawelek and Jordan Lake.
The good news: Griffin was able to get a redshirt season for ’09, meaning he is still just a sophomore heading into the fall.
Baylor, Rice and Texas are all in the middle of spring drills, and they will soon be joined by the state’s other FBS programs.
Texas Tech opens practice next Monday. Then, Texas A&M, TCU and UNT get things started on Tuesday. UTEP (March 25), Houston (March 27) and SMU (March 29) will be the final three schools to start spring practice. All the spring games are scheduled for March 27-April 24, except for SMU, which doesn’t have a spring game.
