Rice became the second in-state FBS program to open spring practice Monday, and within a few weeks the others will join in.
Rice is practicing in shorts the first part of the week and will strap on pads for the first time Thursday. The Owls will have a scrimmage next Tuesday and will have their spring game on March 27. The final practice is March 31.
Across the border, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State also kicked off practice Monday.
The Sooners practiced indoors because of heavy rain. The big news was that injury-plagued running back DeMarco Murray was participating in spring drills for the first time since his freshman year, though he will be held out of all full-contact drills.
