Bi-district in East and Central Texas
Posted by David Smoak on 14 November 2011 | 0 comments

I know this might sound like an echo, but congratulations once again to Alba-Golden and Bullard.

Bullard won their first-ever playoff game, 24-14 against Center, and Alba-Golden won their first playoff game since 1984.

What's more interesting is both these win-thirsty programs are, "Panthers."

Alba-Golden beat Leonard 33-22, and I spoke with Panthers head coach Gary Schultz on the cell afterwards, "Well David, I guess you could say it was truly electric!! The stands had more people cheering for the Alba-Golden Panthers in that one game than in the first twenty games I coached here combined!!! The fan base has been tremendous this year and has grown with each game." Schultz continued, "The win for the program was huge, but it was just as big for the school and community. It has been a long wait, and many outsiders have made many a joke of this area, but I think we are finally getting to prove that we are not a joke anymore. You know, hard work does pay off and our players have learned to believe that they can do it."

(7-4) Alba-Golden will meet (5-5) Hughes Springs on Friday, 7:30pm at Sam Parker Stadium in Mount Pleasant. As I mentioned a week ago as well, Hughes Springs has their own story to tell, coming back from an 0-5 start to win a district championship.

Another group of Panthers, Bullard are enjoying the greatest week in program history---other than when the program launched in 1984 and second-year head coach Shannon Wilson has his football team into the second round and in my opinion, what made the bi-district win against Center so special was how the Panthers had to win the game in the fourth-quarter. Most teams who haven't experienced much success would be looking for a way to almost feel satisfied, nope---not the 2011 Bullard Panthers, they're a gutty, tough team who resembles their coach, "Our coaches and kids did an awesome job in that win against Center and I am very proud of them. Our guys truly understand "team" and play for the "B" (Bullard)."

When I sent a text to Wilson for a quote for this blog, he sent one back and then called me…and I apologized for bothering him so late---he responded, "Hey, that's okay, I'm having a hard time sleeping anyway." You can imagine this young coach with his first-ever head coaching opportunity and in two years he has BULLARD not only in the playoffs but into the second round. Wilson ended his text to me with, "This experience has been awesome for our kids and this community and I am happy to be apart of it."

Go back and ready Schultz' comments and then Wilson's, both mentioned the experience but they both also mentioned the kids and the community. Two communities that haven't had many good memories in football are building as we speak.

(7-4) Bullard will play (9-2) Robinson on Friday, 7:30pm at Bruce Field in Athens. Robinson has a story of their own to tell since the Rockets were 3-7 a year ago. In fact, Robinson is 15-26 since losing to Liberty-Eylau in the Class 3-A State Championship in 2006. Former Cayuga head coach Tommy Allison was hired away from Jacksboro to bring back the magic at Robinson and he's done that in one of the toughest Class 3-A districts (19-3A) in Texas. All three of the playoff teams from 19-3A won their opening round games.

One of those teams from 19-3A, (11-0) La Vega will meet (11-0) top-ranked Chapel Hill at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. When La Vega made their state championship final run in 2008, they crushed Chapel Hill on their way to that game. Chapel Hill is hungry to get back to the Class 3-A, Division I State Championship Game and this should be a good one on Friday night.

And, let's not sleep on a battle of unbeaten teams in Six-Man, where (11-0) Jonesboro will play (11-0) Richland Springs. Richland Springs has won four state championships since 2004, including one a year ago.

Finally, let's go to Class 5-A…where Jack Welch's Copperas Cove Bulldawgs pulled off a near miracle comeback beating Mesquite Horn, 48-47. I'm not trying to compare the comeback to that ESPY winning 1994 Classic between John Tyler and Plano East, but it had its moments. Copperas Cove trailed Horn 34-13 at halftime and 41-20 with 1:13 left in the third-quarter, but exploded for 27-unanswered points to lead 48-41 with 2:50 remaining in the game. But, that wasn't enough, Horn drove for what appeared to be at least the game-tying points and pulled to within one, 48-47 with :50-left in the game. Horn, with their high-octane offense decided to go for the win right then, but Jaguars running back Medgar Coleman was stopped just short of the goal-line by Darius McClinton to preserve the dramatic win for the Bulldawgs.
