(Monday, November 28th)

Midway High School in is starting to make a nice habit of deep playoff trips, including this season as they enter a Class 4-A, Division I Quarterfinal Round game against Wichita Falls Rider.

Midway has been four rounds deep in football in 1997, 1999, 2006, and 2008, but never any further. The Panthers lost in back-to-back years against the Longview Lobos on bang-bang plays near the goal-line, once on a two-point conversion (2008) and the following year on a fourth-down and inches (2009).

Well, the Panthers are a win away from their first-ever trip to the fifth-round of the state playoffs, and they'll have to beat Rider to get reach that next round.

A year ago, Midway was 12-0 before losing to perennial power Denton Ryan, 19-10, and that loss has been on the minds and lips of the returning players for a full year. Now, Midway football can move past that memory after a knock-down, drag-out, old fashioned pound it out defensive struggle against Ryan, with Midway winning this time, 19-7.

In our post-game radio broadcast following their win against Ryan, Midway's second-year head coach Terry Gambill was overcome with emotion and choked up knowing his team just beat a great program in Denton Ryan. Afterall, Joey Florence and the Raiders have played in five state championship games since 2000, winning twice in 2001 and 2002. Gambill and his staff put together a tremendous gameplan on offense and defense and the players came through with a win against what I call in a very complimentary way, "big boy program" --- and when asked about the importance of the win, Gambill told me, "You will either sacrifice now or you will sacrifice later." His Panthers talked all season about week-to-week, but there was never a doubt they had Denton Ryan on their mind since late-November a year ago.

Also in Class 4-A, Division II, John Tyler has won ten consecutive games including their heart-stopping 42-39 win against previously-unbeaten Highland Park. Now, John Tyler has won some big-time games in their long history, including state championships in 1930, 1973 and 1994, but a lot of the statewide writer's were picking the unbeaten Scots…well, perhaps those same writer's haven't been reading this blog---and how those three losses for John Tyler were against 5-A's, Longview, Lufkin and Tyler Lee. Longview was just knocked-out this past weekend, Lufkin was stunned by Spring Westfield in the first-round and Westfield is still alive, and the third loss was to crosstown rival Tyler Lee…and although the Red Raiders were 1-9, yep, you guessed it, you can throw out the records in that game each season.

Daingerfield has won six state championships in their program history, including three in a row, so it's no surprise the Tigers have responded to a tremendous challenge from as recently as late-October. On Sunday, October 23rd, I wrote about Redwater ending the Tigers nearly half-decade long district winning streak and that Daingerfield had already lost three games this season (Atlanta, Gilmer and Redwater). I wasn't sure if the Tigers would finish with a four-peat, but there was no doubt they would make another deep run and someone good was going to have to take them out.

Well, it won't be Redwater after Daingerfield pounded them, 55-13, and what you would think would be sweet revenge, but not according to first-year Tigers head coach Aric Sardanea, "We played a very good football team in district and last Friday in the playoffs. On any given night any team in our district is capable of winning. In district they beat us in all three phases of football. Our goal was to not look back but to correct our mistakes, to keep getting better fundamentally and to keep growing as a family. We knew there was a good chance that we could meet up with them again because they were a well coached team. Our kids never talked about revenge, that’s not what we teach and allow. They just talked about wanting to play better than they did in the first matchup."

Well, there's a reason Daingerfield has won six state titles, they keep looking forward not backward and it's also why Sardanea took the challenge of replacing Barry Bowman as the AD/Football Coach, "The tradition that we have here is awesome. The richness of this program goes back a long time and I’ve enjoyed every second since I came here in March. I’d like to thank Coach Hardin at Rowlett for preparing me for this opportunity and Coach Bowman at Paris for helping me with the transition here. This program keeps bouncing back because failure is not a option here. When you have that belief then adversity is a lot easier to handle because you continue to work harder at becoming the best. I have handled the expectations very well. I don’t get too high or too low. The quarterfinals is a huge accomplishment considering many didn’t think that this group could accomplish so much. I’m excited for them and this community."0

In TAPPS, Division III, Brook Hill is back again for another shot at the state championship after losing in back-to-back years to Reicher (35-28) and Austin Regents (38-7). Well, the Guard will get a chance against Regents again this Saturday, 1:00pm, at Leo Buckley Field in Killeen. Brook Hill faced a crossroads moment after losing three straight to Parish Episcopal, Pittsburg and Fort Worth Trinity Valley, but they've gutted through that 1-3 start and head coach Terry Pirtle feels this is his best team since arriving in 2009, "Our team chemistry is special, and our defense has been tremendous this season. Offensively, we have eight players who have scored at least five touchdowns this season."
