The 2011 season didn't go as planned for a number of college football teams. Texas A&M disappointed with a 6-6 regular season finish, ending in the firing of head coach Mike Sherman. Rice once again failed to meet expectations, putting coach David Bailiff on the hot seat once again. Texas Tech missed a bowl for the first time in almost two decades. Even SMU, despite making a bowl and even winning it, seemed to fall short of their potential.

UTEP, too, struggled through 2011, managing only a 5-7 record and missing a bowl game. The offense scuffled and the defense was routinely lit up for big play after big play. But it wasn't all bad news out in El Paso.

With just nine days left until the release of the 2012 Winter Edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, we're able to unveil DCTF's pick for UTEP's breakout player of 2011, written by MoiseKapenda Bower:

BREAKOUT PLAYER: RS-Fr. WR Jordan Leslie.

Coach Mike Price knew he had a star in the making in Leslie, and the Tomball product didn’t disappoint. He finished second on the Miners in receptions (30) and third in receiving yards (430), complementing Mike Edwards and Donavon Kemp. With seven offensive starters back in 2012, Leslie is poised for an even bigger role.
